San Francisco Shakespeare Festival

Mission

The mission of the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival is to make Shakespeare and the performing arts available to everyone regardless of age, ethnicity, financial status or level of education.

Values

For many of our audiences, we are the first point of contact with Shakespeare and the performing arts. For this reason, the quality of our programming must represent the plays in their finest light, demonstrate their relevance to today’s society, and inspire our audiences to seek out additional theatrical experiences. We believe that Shakespeare experienced in a communal setting, whether it be outdoors, in a classroom, or in a theatre, elates the soul, inspires the mind, and unifies those who sit beside each other..

The language is clear and the colorful Renaissance Italian costumes are blithely humorous. Still better, Shakespeare’s uppity, wisecracking servants are genuinely funny.
— Robert Hurwitt, The San Francisco Chronicle
