Container Globe, LLC
The Container Globe is a reimagining of Shakespeare’s Globe theater, with many of the same performance characteristics of the original Globe. The open-air theater features a large stage that projects out into the ground floor area, and both the standing patrons and the audience seated in the surrounding ring of containers will be very close to the performers. This will promote an intimate and engaging experience that will be unique to this venue.
In Shakespeare’s time, his plays were regarded as popular entertainment, and not as the sometimes elitist or intellectual classical works that some may think of them today. In this spirit, we will be programming the Container Globe to provide a wide and eclectic range of entertainment and performances, that will include not only Shakespeare, but also dance, jazz, hip-hop, rock and other popular music.
Detroit has a strong Electronic Dance Music (EDM) and Techno scene and the industrial look and feel of the containers will be completely suited to EDM shows. The intimacy of the Globe will also work well for spoken word events, poetry slams, storytelling, and similar events.
We also are looking to make the Globe available to local schools, colleges and community groups and partner with local Detroit arts organizations. The Globe may be used as an inexpensive venue for education, neighborhood engagement and as a place for Detroiters with an interest in the arts to meet.
As the Container Globe is modeled on Shakespeare’s own original Globe, this provides the opportunity to present his plays in a very similar way to how they were performed in his own time – in daylight, with the actors and audience very close to each other and able to see and interact with each other. This interplay of the audience and performers brings a distinct spontaneity, energy and vitality to the performances that is some- times lost when the plays are performed in a more modern venue where the audience sits in the dark and is separated from the actors onstage.
